Backyards, 2013, Inkjet Print, 50X70
Nadia’s photographs were taken in the backyards of villas
in a small and sleepy peripheral town in the south of Israel.
These large houses represent the Israeli dream come true of
a home with a picket fence. Shuvalov does not focus on the
more presentable facade of the houses, but rather on the
intimate backyard, used for family time. These images are
charged with a social critique - the backyards are presented
empty and alienated, lacking a sense of identity and solidarity
with the community, which was so characteristic of Israeli
society in the past.
