HACHSAN, 2013, Video (15:25 min loop)

The video presented in the exhibition is part of a large body of work Hagar is working on, based on a personal and public cultural research. Hagar is of Moroccan descent, and grew up in Afula, a peripheral town in the north of Israel, with residents from many cultural backgrounds. In her work she explores the Jewish culture of Maghreb. Her video work is a part of a simple and primal cultural space where Hagar appropriates ethnic elements, takes them out of their natural position and recomposes them, bringing them into her personal world but with a hint of the old world as something to remember. A new visual world is thus created inside an existing culture, using minimalism and a static object made animate - a horse saddle with no knight, riding nowhere. The video was shot in the Center for Jewish-Moroccan Legacy in Jerusalem.
